With the ever-increasing popularity of smartphones, there are a growing number of manufacturers making earphones and headsets especially to accompany them -  but how do you choose which to go for? Making a decision can be mind-boggling, which is why we at AMP3 have decided to create a quick guide to some of the better sets out there.

 

MEElectronics M9P Sound Isolating Earphones for iPhone/Mobile (£17.95)

 

We’ll start by taking a look at one of the more budget-friendly sets available, the MEElectronics M9P. MeElectronics are a relatively new brand to the UK market, who offer good sound quality and value for money.

 

What makes the MEElectronics M9P Sound Isolating Earphones for iPhone/Mobile great?

 

•    Great for tighter budgets
•    Work with most mobiles
•    Impressive sound quality

 

What isn’t so good?

 

•    Mic isn’t as sensitive as on some other earphones
•    Cable-noise.
•    Not compatible with all mobiles

 

 

SoundMagic MP21 In-Ear Earphones with Mic for iPhone & Music Phones (£24.99)

 

 

Priced just a little higher, the Soundmagic MP21s are another fab set to consider.

 

The Soundmagic brand is relatively new to the UK, however we at AMP3 are rather fond of them as they offer great quality and value at a pocket-pleasing price.

 

Offering deep bass, a smooth midrange and detailed trebles, these suit a variety of musical tastes.

•    Frequency response of 15Hz – 22kHz
•    Work with most mobile-phones
•    Budget-friendly.

 

What isn’t so good?

 

•    Not overly bassy – not ideal for dance or R ‘n’ B music
•    No volume adjustment through in-line control
•    No skip-track function with in-line control

 

 

 

MEElectronics Clarity Series CC-51P Ceramic In-Ear Headphone with microphone and remote for iPhone and smartphones (£45.99)

 

 

Another set we recommend often is the MeElectronics CC51P. These are rather unique in that they are made from super-durable ceramic, which also minimises distortion.

•    Quality ceramic housing – very durable!
•    Decent bass response makes them suitable for a wide range of musical tastes
•    Small in-ear design ensures a comfortable fit for all.

 

What isn’t so good?

 

•    Not compatible with all models,- only work with a handful of Android devices at present.
•    Mic button is a little bulkier than that on other models
•    Mic button action can sometimes be a little laggy

 

 

 

Denon AH-C560R “Mobile Elite” In-Ear Headphones with 3-Button Remote + Mic (£59.99)

 

 

Here at AMP3 we’ve stocked the Denon brand for many years, and they’ve always delivered excellent quality. Despite being famous for their ‘traditional’ styling and soundstaging, they have recently released some modern ingenuity in the form of the AH-C560R. As these aren’t overly bass-heavy, they may not be ideal for bassy music, but they really do produce something rather special when playing classical or acoustic music. With a built-in 3-button remote and microphone, you can skip track and adjust the volume with these too, which is very handy and sets these apart from many others available out there.

•    3-button remote allows for tracks to be skipped without taking your phone out of your pocket
•    Excellent, detailed sound reproduction

What isn’t so good?

 

•    Whilst the mic will work with most handsets, the remote functions are limited to Apple models only.
•    Not too bassy, so not suited to everyone’s tastes
•    They’ll reveal any issues with your files – it’s best to use higher-quality file types.

 

 

 

JayBird Bluetooth Sportsband 2 Headphones (£89.00)

 

 

A really innovative and popular brand here at AMP3 are Jaybird. Specialising wireless Bluetooth functionality, they really are a force to be reckoned with. Available in 3 funky colours, the Jaybird Sportsband II suit a variety of tastes.

 

What makes the JayBird Bluetooth Sportsband 2 Headphones great?

 

•    Wire-free design makes the perfect for ‘on the go’ use
•    Volume and skip-track buttons built-into headset
•    Work with most Bluetooth devices

 

What isn’t so good?

 

•    Being wireless, the sound quality isn’t quite as high as a wired set within the same price range.
•    They do require charging via USB every now and then.
•    The headband design might not be comfortable for everyone.

 

 

 

Phonak Audéo Perfect Fit Earphones 022 with Mic (£89.00)

 

 

For those who feel high sound quality is very important,  Swiss brand Phonak Audeo are a firm favourite. Their small, lightweight design combined with dual balanced armature driver units have helped seal their place in the favourites list at AMP3 too. The Phonak Audeo PFE 022 are a mid-range set that combine great value with high quality.

 

What makes the Phonak Audéo Perfect Fit Earphones 022 with Mic great?

 

•    Small and lightweight – very comfortable!
•    Great balanced sound with a tight, crisp and punchy bass response.
•    Mic is responsive, these handle calls well.

 

What isn’t so good?

 

•    No skip-track or inline volume controls.
•    Quite high impedance level.
•    Not as budget-friendly as some other sets out there.

 

 

 

Sennheiser IE8i High-Fidelity Noise-Isolating Earphones with Integrated Mic and Smart Remote (£209.00)

 

 

Whilst all the afore-mentioned sets are wonderful, we understand you audiophiles out there may feel a little neglected. Fret not, Sennheiser hold the answer! Their IE8i offer the same excellent audio reproduction as their flagship IE8, but with the added bonus of an in-line remote and microphone.
